Following a successful partnership with RAC in 2016, PA was appointed to masterplan and design the redevelopment of Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort to align with RAC’s strategy of providing family-oriented, value for money accommodation in this iconic tourist destination.

The 9.2Ha site is located within the Shark Bay World Heritage area, adjacent to the southern boundary of the Francois Peron National Park. The property is supported by a separate infrastructure facility providing power generation and water treatment processes that allows the resort to function independently.

PA’s role in the redevelopment included masterplanning the site to improve the guest arrival experience, increase the quality and quantity of guest and staff accommodation, provide better all-season recreation facilities and to enhance extended customer stay and repeat visitation.

New accommodation facilities focused attention on beachside living; a total of 12 new 2 and 3-bed cabins were provided with one specifically addressing accessibility needs of guests. This extended to provision of 96 powered accommodation vehicle sites, 15 powered sites with ensuite amenities and 10 premium beachfront sites. 68 unpowered camping sites were planned on new turf zones. Much needed staff accommodation was provided, with 32 senior staff in modular units and 45 rooms provided for the resort’s itinerant workforce.

Twelve months of planning and design by PA led an early contractor involvement and consultant team through a Development Application process that considered local planning constraints and opportunities, coastal hazards studies and environmental and bushfire assessments, culminating in 2017. Construction commenced via a forward works civil package in late 2017 and the project was delivered in stages between June and September of the following year.
