KEY PERSONNEL Greg Paterson, Chris Low
Having completed a rigorous Project Definition Plan (PDP), a subsequent selection process led to the appointment of Paterson Architects (PA) as Lead Consultant to direct a large consultant team to commence the detailed design services for an Integrated Operations Centre for our Client.
The briefing document developed from close liaison with stakeholder groups and ran parallel with early phases of concept and design development, with each informing the other at varying times. The method of briefing and decision making centered on a rigorous Q&A process that took place progressively from late 2023. This process resulted in a built outcome that addressed a complex and multi-faceted scope and promoted an approach where our Client was involved in each and every step.
The detailed design process required us to undertake the following tasks:
- To systematically review and enhance the design outcome
- To refine and/or confirm the brief, including site details
- To identify environmental risks associated with the site
- To review operational and functional requirements
- To review and endorse the architectural design principles of the building
- To liaise and coordinate subconsultant design
- To cost plan and forecast in conjunction with the project QS
- To incorporate maintenance minimisation strategies
- To review project risks
Our Client’s key business objectives were:
- To house all current employees in one complex to enable teams to interact daily
- To create a working environment that promoted improved collaborations, enhanced effectiveness and productivity
- To improve operating cost efficiencies as well as an improved customer experience
The design focus was to ensure the building created:
- An aesthetic that engaged with the broader community and responded to adjacent precincts, to positively engage with the highly visible point of entry to the site and surrounds
- Its own sense of place and space, integrated into the working area of an activated industrial environment by providing clear and logical wayfinding for vehicles, staff, visitors and deliveries and safe movement for pedestrian traffic
- A design outcome that reflected the Client’s aspirations
- An industrial design response to long, linear planes in the building sympathetic to the built forms within the overall precinct
