The Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation (CERI) provides office facilities to startup companies to generate creative new business ideas. The energy and dynamism of these startups require a modern workplace. Additionally, offices for the Client, Bass Group, were required.

The 1,000m² CERI and Bass Group fitout took up Level\ 1 of an existing 3,000m² three-storey building. PA was also responsible for the design and documentation of the refurbishment of the Ground and Level 2, including all base building services.

The CERI startup facility is an ‘open shell’ fitout with minimal ceilings and extensive open plan areas. Users can change furniture configurations and a range of furniture is available including high communal tables, low lounges and standard height tables. The communal open spaces generate a ‘campus’ environment, including hard and wireless connections to power, data and AV resources.

The challenge was to respond to a specific brief with undefined final tenant needs. For instance, startup companies could come from disparate industries and have varying needs. PA’s response was to provide an intuitive space where open plan spaces could be used in an ABW (activity-based working) modality.
