PA was engaged in 2013 by Catholic Education Western Australia Ltd (CEWA) to provide design services to assist development of a new school, proposed as a 1600-student Kindergarten – Year 12 College on a greenfield site.

Bounded by a State Government high school to the east, the 10ha site is surrounded by a large residential estate that developed from earlier agricultural and equestrian uses.

A strong formal wind break of mature red and flooded gum trees is the site’s only significant feature, a landmark indicating the position of old paddock fence lines. Estimated at 60 to 70 years old, the trees have formed an anchor point for the campus design.

Conceived around a series of outdoor court spaces, the campus design strove to create a place of gathering and shelter, protected from strong easterly winds blowing across the site from the nearby Darling Scarp. The buildings have been arranged in a parkland setting, with emphasis on strong connections to outdoor learning and play spaces.

The last decade of development has seen six stages of design undertaken by our office, with future stage planning proposed to align with the College’s strategic position and in support of its vision to be the Catholic school of choice in the Byford region.
