Frank Butler Community Centre
The City of Karratha established a brief to build a new community facility to replace an aging structure adjacent to Bulgarra Oval, Karratha. A design and construct methodology was adopted as the preferred procurement model and Paterson Group Architects, in conjunction with Cooper & Oxley, secured the commission late in 2010. The design brief was to incorporate:
- A multi-use function space
- Meeting rooms
- A fully equipped kitchen and kiosk
- Two sets of change rooms
- Referee/family change area
- First Aid room
- Bar servery
- Equipment and waste storage
The Client sought to establish a new benchmark in innovative architectural design. The building was to complement the landscape through the selection of materials and colours suitable for the region and sustainable design, all within a disciplined financial framework.
The end result is a Centre which achieved the functional requirements specified but also created a building with an architectural and community identity. A key element to the design of the facility was to take into account the climatic conditions that prevail and to present solutions that may be used in the future development of community infrastructure.
