Canning River Eco Education Centre
The Canning River Eco-Education Centre developed from a State Government initiative to foster environmental awareness within the Canning River Regional Park, demonstrating a sustainable environmental path for the future.
Located close to the banks of the river, the brief required Paterson Architects to meet the needs of educators, local community groups and the general public through a simple laboratory space, internal and external teaching areas, an interpretive art gallery, group meeting rooms, function/seminar spaces and kiosk/café.
Extensive liaison occurred with all stakeholders including the City of Canning, local environmental groups, local indigenous groups and local schools who would either use the complex or had an interest in safeguarding the environment in the vicinity of the complex. Throughout, Paterson Architects worked with both Joint Working Group and Project Control Group committees.
The excellent tender result, $160 000 below the estimate, allowed the expansion of the interactive gallery, additional funds for rock retaining walls, installation of CCTV monitoring and a capital injection into the café fit out.
The complex received an MBA Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency, a direct reflection of the sustainability initiatives introduced by Paterson Architects.
