Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women
This project, the provision of a pre-release centre for women, established new standards of service and treatment for women in custody.
The architectural challenge was to create an environment that enhanced and supported the operational and philosophical requirements of the project. This was achieved by providing a non-institutional, non-threatening environment based on a village concept of multiple residences in a park setting.
Since completion, the facility has been praised for its spatial logic, nurturing environment and the integration of the built forms and landscaped spaces.
The village setting also provides facilities that replicate those available in the broader community. The character of the complex came from a belief in the capacity of the women to make reparation to society, take control of their lives, expand their choices and contribute to safer communities.
The circular form of the spiritual centre stands apart from the architecture of any traditional spiritual building and promotes the concept of a healing circle. It is a space for sharing oral history, to facilitate healing of the spirit and to strengthen kinship.
